The vibrant green ferns of spring meet the golden late evening sunlight. Mattatuck State Forest, Plymouth, Connecticut. Near Lake Plymouth. June 17, 2021, 6:16 PM.

We are following an old woods road covered with rocks and exposed tree roots and shoots of new spring grass. The forest floor around the old road is covered with a mass of ferns wearing the vibrant green shades of springtime. There are a couple of broad old tree trunks in the surrounding forest, but most of the trunks are narrower, belonging to trees only a few decades old. We are looking downward, so the sky is not visible in the photo. The late afternoon sun is shining in from the right on a low angle, casting long shadows and a golden light where it breaks through.

Exploding clouds sunset, Hidden Lake, Fall Mountain, Plymouth, Connecticut. August 28, 2020, 7:12 PM.

We are standing on a low ridge looking down over the treetops at a small pond surrounded by forest below. A small tree rises to our right. The sun is setting behind a massive swirl of fair weather clouds disintegrating into haze and smaller clouds. It looks almost like a stop action of a cloud explosion. Between the clouds, the sky is pale orange and gold around the setting sun and a pale blue gray elsewhere.

We are standing beside a lakeshore, looking out over tall grasses and leafy sprouts across a quiet cove enclosed by wooded peninsulas left and right and a small wooded island in the near distance straight ahead. The surface of the cove is covered with hundreds of green lily pads. The sky is mostly cloudy; above the wooded far shore of the lake breaks in the clouds allow the bright oranges of the sunset to show through.

A pale blue gray evening sky with a few intertwined long, narrow wisps of cloud. The sun has set behind a low wooded ridge across a large lake, creating a pale golden glow along the horizon. A rocky peninsula juts out into the lake on the right in front of us, creating a small cove that mirrors the sky on its gently rippled surface. In the foreground are leafy shrubs and a bright green ground cover filled with dozens of small yellow flowers. A few trees and shrubs are growing along the top of the peninsula.

The thunderstorm ate my sunset. Lost Ponds, Mattatuck State Forest, Plymouth, Connecticut. Winds ahead of the coming storm ripple the pond's surface, distorting the reflection of the thunderhead engulfing the setting sun. July 14, 2018, 7:41 PM.

We are sitting on a big gray rock along the shore of a pond. There are a couple of leafy green shoots growing behind the rock and in front of it. The wooded far shore is silhouetted in the late evening light. We can see a sliver of sky, dark clouds and a patch of golden sunlight. A breeze is rippling the lake surface, distorting slightly the reflection of the sky, where a dark towering thunderhead is beginning to move across the golden orb of the setting sun.

I feel it in the air the summer's out of reach sunset (h/t Mike Campbell and Don Henley). New Britain Reservoir, Southington, Connecticut. August 31, 2020, 7:03 PM.

A deepening blue evening sky looking north with a band of clouds and haze near the horizon. The offscreen setting sun is painting those clouds pale gold and pale yellow. We are on a rocky peninsula covered with leafy shrubs and grass on top looking across a small cove formed by this and a similar rocky peninsula a short distance down the lakeshore. Beyond that are several other small bays and the forested north shore of the lake. To our right is part of the eastern shore, similarly wooded. A late summer breeze is softly rippling the lake.

The Not Grass Sunset, New Britain Reservoir, Southington, Connecticut. September 11, 2019, 7:03 PM. Exposed lakebed. Those leafy ground hugging plants only resemble a carpet of grass from a distance.

We are standing on low, rather flat ground near the shore of a lake. The ground is covered with bright green plants that is currently sprouting hundreds of tiny yellow flowers. There are many scattered gray rocks and boulders poking through the ground cover. The far shore of the lake is also covered with a wide strip of these plants, which resemble grass from this distance. Beyond that strip is a low forested ridge. Above that is a single large cloud tinted orange, gold and dark purple from the setting sun. The rest of the sky is pale blue gray.

Europe goes into daylight saving time despite controversy.

Most Europeans woke up on Sunday clocks that jumped forward by one hour.

The twice-annual time change has long been contentious and was even voted against in an EU open consultation back in 2018.

Why does everybody say the time change means we get an hour less sleep (or an hour more when going back to winter time)? That's not how sleep works. You get docked an hour of the day, even though the change is done in the night. Bodies will sleep X hours unless disturbed by the alarm clock (so people on a rigid schedule and weekend duty *will* get an hour less sleep, that's true).

I've just checked and the trilithons and lintels at #Stonehenge have been successfully set to British Summer Time (UTC+1).

I really do wonder if this is a tradition we could now abandon. Such a time consuming exercise twice every year to change them

Perhaps we should abandon BST and just stick to GMT (UTC+0) and honor our four fathers and five mothers some other way?

Detectives wearing grass skirts arrested a rock singer. The detectives, who were also carrying mouth organs, called on American rock singer and band leader Jimmy “Baby Face” Lewis. They were there for an interview, but instead charged Lewis with peddling drugs to other entertainers. A list of 100 customers, including prominent show people from Hollywood, was found.
