Macadamia facts!

Apart from being completely delicious and an Aussie native and farmed near my home in #Queensland, macadamia nuts are darn near uncrackable unless you have a fancy macadamia nut cracker.

Which I do.

Macadamia nut season is long. Macadamia nuts usually fall to the ground when they are ready, over 5–6 months. Chart: @DiDoesDigital

Macadamia nut shells are hard.
The hard macadamia shells are wrapped in soft green husks. After the husks are removed, the nuts are dried and cracked using specialist nut crackers.

There are 4 major macadamia production regions in Australia:
1. Central Queensland (CQ): Mackay, Bundaberg
2. South East Queensland (SEQ): Gympie, Glass House Mountains
3. Northern Rivers NSW (NRNSW): Lismore
4. Mid North Coast NSW (MNNSW): Macksville

Macadamia species are threatened.
There are four threatened macadamia species native to Australia:
Vulnerable: Macadamia integrifolia (Queensland nut tree)
Endangered: Macadamia jansenii (Bulburin nut tree)
Vulnerable: Macadamia ternifolia (Gympie nut)
Vulnerable: Macadamia tetraphylla (rough-shelled bush nut)
There are only around 60 Bulberin macadamia nut plants left in the wild in an area of less than 1 hectare.

Stopped in at the spillway as we were passing Wivenhoe Dam today. You could see mist from the road. Only two of the gates were open—and only a little at that, but it was quite the spectacle.
