Meteorologists raise alarm over grounding of Omaha weather balloons amid federal cuts

“National Weather Service offices in Omaha and Rapid City, South Dakota, stopped deploying weather balloons, a key tool in forecasting. On the same day, six other weather stations in the central U.S, including at North Platte, halved their use of balloons.”

I went into a store while #weather was cloudy but dry. While shopping, the forecast for scattered showers came to fruition. I returned outside to find the pavement wet and some hail on the ground. A thunderstorm had apparently just gone by, since that's the only place hail comes from. #Portland #PNW #ORwx

National Weather Service offices cancel more storm spotter/severe weather trainings

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The National Weather Service offices in Sioux Falls and Omaha have canceled several upcoming storm spotter and severe weather awareness training sessions.

The class that was scheduled for April 2 at Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City is among the list of canceled courses. So is the April 1 course at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk, NE, and the April 29 advanced training class, also originally scheduled to take place in Norfolk.

A spokesperson for the Omaha NWS office says that due to “ongoing critical NWS staffing shortages,” the office will be unable to present any storm spotter classes until further notice, including online/virtual courses. #weather #NWS #SpotterTraining #NE #IA
