Curtiss sat on his bunk after the day's field exercises & was about to take off his boots when Sergeant Baker tapped him on the shoulder.
"Step into my office, Boy!"
Curtiss dragged himself to his feet & followed the Sergeant into the supply closet.
"Close the door!"
Nervously, Curtiss closed the door & faced the Sergeant.
"By the skies, Boy!" he growled. "What were you doing out there!"
"Sergeant?" Curtiss said.
"You're supposed to be squad leader today! What, by the skies, was that?"
Curtiss looked at him curiously. "I was trying to #lead by example."
Sergeant Baker rolled his eyes & genuinely laughed for a moment. Then he got deadly serious.
"You can't do that, Boy. You have to take command. You have to give the men orders."
Curtiss looked down. "But…"
"But nothing! You've got good instincts. Those instincts will save your men someday. But only if you tell 'em what to do. Understood?"
"Yes, Sergeant," Curtiss said. "Thank you, Sergeant."
"Now get outta my office!"
