Have also decided I'm definitely getting a manual wheelchair. Powerchair is a want but not a need, and we absolutely do not have the space to keep one or drive the fucking thing into/out of the house. And that's even before we get to the COST. So manual.
So, that in mind, wheelchair users. Any tips/suggestions, comments, recommendations? :WheelchairPunk: :SkullCrossCanes: #disability #wheelchair #disabled

Something to always be aware of: Many wheelchair users can stand and move around for brief periods of time. Not all wheelchair users are paralysed. Reasons for wheelchair use are numerous and varied.

Some wheelchair users choose not to stand in public because chances are they will be chastised and harassed if they do. With more awareness and understanding this risk can hopefully diminish over time.

For example, if a wheelchair user is able to retrieve their own wheelchair from the boot/trunk of their car, this does not mean they are ”faking”, and accusing them of this is ableist in itself.

”Ambulatory wheelchair user” is something you can search for to learn more, as many are sharing their experiences online, like Lauren:

Mysite · Ten Things I Wish You Knew (from an Ambulatory Wheelchair User)A small guide on things to consider before you interact with wheelchair users, and other disabled people, based on my experience as an ambulatory wheelchair user. When most people think of a wheelchair user, they automatically think of someone with a spinal cord injury, resulting in some form of paralysis (paraplegia, quadriplegia, hemiplegia, etc). While it may come as a surprise to many, an astounding amount of people who use wheelchairs are ambulatory (are capable of walking, at least to some

And home! A pretty good first attempt I’d say.
The staff at the stations were great and even though we had an open return ticket, I easily booked a ramp for the way home with only about 30 minutes notice. Although I wouldn’t assume that’s possible when it’s busier.

The least accessible part was actually the lifts in Westquay itself. We had to wait ages for one that wasn’t already full of prams or large groups of people.
It probably didn’t help that two of the massive escalators weren’t working.

Update: we have made it to Westquay!

The biggest (smallest) obstacle was the lifts at our local station. They are so tiny and narrow and we are *not* narrow people. But more importantly, they’re so small I have to reverse my chair out or into them.

I’m getting quite good at forward but reverse is a whole different ball game and I really think I’d struggle on my own.
Not least, because the door wouldn’t stay open long enough for me to manoeuvre.

The train was relatively straightforward, though I do need more practice going straight up ramps. Down is easier but still terrifying.

If it goes well today I may even consider going alone, which would be a HUGE step.
I’d have to seriously consider getting myself a disabled rail pass and then I’d be unstoppable.

I’m glad I started doing the 1 second a day video thing too, because I recently looked back at July last year and it was nearly all around the house - cats, garden etc.
This month is so different.

If this continues I’m actually going to have to admit I’m a real person 😳

I’m still blown away by the amount of confidence the chair has given me. It’s like having my own little safe space bubble.
I’ve spent years at this point barely leaving the house. These days I look forward to going places and seeing things.
Even interacting with people is somehow easier. Though I do need to come up with more things to say in the awkward British *excuse me, sorry, oops I’m sorry* nonsense.

Doing another Scary Thing today and taking the train into Southampton with Roach ♿
I’ve booked a ramp and we’ll be just mooching around Westquay for a bit then probably coming home.

I’ve never done a train or large shopping centre in a wheelchair before so I’m anxious.

Not sure where I’m supposed to park on the train. I haven’t booked a wheelchair space, was I supposed to? However, D will be with me and it’s only a 10-15 minute journey so hopefully it’ll be fine.

Free Manual Wheelchair Reference Models (Version 2)
I've updated the wheelchair models I released for last year's Disability pride month to include adjustable shaders/materials that carry over into programs like Clip Studio Paint for folks who just want to use them as reference, and (what I hope is) a clearer guide on how to use, import/export and make alterations to them!
Each chair is designed to suit different kinds of characters with different disabilities and lifestyles. The chairs available right now are:

2 Active urban-style chairs (one of which includes a rear-mounted power assist)
1 off-road active chair
1 children's wheelchair
and 1 standard "hospital" wheelchair.

and I'm planning to add 2 more by the end of disability pride month (2025)
ko-fi.com/cycyborg/shop
Or you can download the pack drive.google.com/file/d/1Tzm_T
Included in each download is:

the original .blend file for each wheelchair model
an .obj and .mtl file for each chair that can be imported into other 3D modelling software or into some art programs like Clip Studio Paint
A link to a user's manual that explains how to make alterations to the files for those less familiar with Blender, and how to import and save them to your Clip Studio Paint Asset/Material library on both desktop and ipad versions of CSP.

I would really like to keep updating these files and eventually include rigs for each (one of these was rigged previously, but I'm not sure what happened, it seems to have broken after one of the Blender updates)

Just like last time, they're completely free to use, with the caveat that they can't be resold or used in AI training. Credit isn't required but is greatly appreciated (as are tags so I can see art that used them!)
