James M.
🧵

The world needs a secure, open source alternative to Facebook private posting (i.e. to friends only), but nothing on the fediverse really fills the need today, alas. At the Fediforum in June, I gave a short presentation on FriendSafe, a social media system I've written that supports private posting. It's a proof of concept that works today, but it would need major UX work and a security review before it's really ready for widespread use. It has a few other features I haven't seen in other social media yet, and which I'd love to see added to other projects.

In this thread is that 10-slide presentation, one slide per post. The text in the slides is the same as the text in the posts. The presentation is focused on FriendSafe, but I'm also just trying to get these ideas out there.

Let's start a conversation. Specifically, how can we move forward to get secure private posting ASAP, with full mobile support, etc.? I think this is critical to let people exit FB.

@fediforum

#fediforum #SocialMedia #privacy

@j12t @laurenshof I agree that hoping for internet users from around the globe to start eating there digital vegetables (to paraphrase @cwebber) is not a strategy. I disagree that this is what "the #fediverse tells itself". Maybe some ⁂-individuals do. However, I only need to think about the recent #FediForum to recall so many, and much more inspiring narratives on the potential of federated socials. Not only *growth potential* by the way; there is are great values without growth too.

Re: FediCon presenters

Can we just take a beat and acknowledge that some of the presenters at FediCon this August probably wouldn't be there if they hadn't gotten a chance to lead a session or two at @j12t@j12t.social's FediForum unconference?

Way to go!

Another #FediForumFriday post, this time to help @elena 's video get even further and convert more folks to fedi! @juergen_hubert is working on the idea of a "FediCard" and is looking for feedback and ideas: mementomori.social/@juergen_hu .

Memento moriJürgen Hubert (@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social)Attached: 1 image Okay here is my very simple concept for a #FediCard - a "business card" that encourages people to join the #Fediverse and links to @_elena@mastodon.social 's explanatory video. My idea is that people can hand these out at #protests, political organizations, and so forth - where politically active people gather who already have had bad experiences with commercial social media. The back side could be customized further to list an instance which is most relevant to the place where you want to share them - for example, I want to print a variant for the gruene.social #Mastodon instance. I will certainly try to apply my meagre #design skills to make this more appealing, but first I wanted to hear what you all think of this concept, and what your suggestions for improvement are. (Note: If you want to play around with the design, I have made it available in #SVG / #Inkscape format. The template has the 85 x 55 mm size for European business cards, so you will want to adjust it for other regions.) #FediHelp https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JxwrLkpvuBaAcRMLFoEjbIXJnhO-bs3r
