The Palace of the Republic was not just the seat of the parliament but also a major culture venue with restaurants and cafes.

Erich (Honecker)'s Lamp Shop, as it was called locally was symbolic of both the lack of democracy and the accessibility of government in . It may have been a dictatorship, but it wasn't as far removed (physically or notionally) from individuals' everyday experiences as some governments today.
