Thanks for the kind comments on my blog post folks. It was an intensely personal thing to write. It's interesting that having shared it in a bunch of places Mastodon is the only place where I've received pushback. Mostly on my choice or platform and how I shared the link. I've not been here so much lately and I don't remember this impersonal and impatient vibe before. Have things changed?
@Snoweider I think many people on Mastodon have decided for themselves that certain values are very important to them when it comes to choosing platforms - if they weren’t, they’d probably go to bluesky because it has more reach and more people (often very nice people!). Substack is a platform that does NOT subscribe to those values, so mastodon is probably the no 1 place where people would tell you about that.
@Snoweider I personally do not read it as impersonal/impatient, but more like what would happen if you were handing out flyers to your open mic night and some people would say “hey, I know your thing is on Thursdays but on Tuesdays that place has a skinhead meet up so I’m not comfortable going there”
@venite @Snoweider It's more like "on Tuesdays that place pays a right-wing agitator to come and speak, so I'm not comfortable giving them any attention." Substack doesn't just permit, it encourages.
I know a few people who've migrated smoothly from #substack to #ghost, so it's not a tech problem.
Otherwise, I think Anna's right - it's not impatient to let you know about ethical issues you may not have realised.
