Why does every article I read about Austin losing its weirdness have an unnecessary reactionary bent?

Is it really necessary, when talking about the hippies and weirdos getting priced out, to do a soft-focus profile of a transphobic bigot?

I mean, I know the answer to these questions, but it's still frustrating.

I'd love to read an article that centered and interviewed the weirdos, hippies, and artists. They have much more interesting things to say than the silicon valley types.

I first visited Austin in the mid90s. I ran into a guy I’d worked with in Oregon, who moved to Austin to work for IBM. We sat down for a beer and he spent an hour bending my ear about how awful all those “hippies” were. I let him rant, rather than remind him I was a leading edge boomer who had lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and knew a lot of hippies , some of whom were right honorable people. OTOH his attitude explained a lot about how he dumped a woman friend in Portland.
