Apparently my one book and most of my academic papers are in the libgen database, all under my deadname.
So, yeah. Seems like a lot of what LLMs regurgitate about quantum computers will be trained on misgendering me.
Fucking wonderful.
I'm old enough to remember when journals hounded Aaron Swartz to his death over daring to archive papers, and here it is Zuckerberg et al can just... do that and so much more with zero compensation to authors, as long as they promise to only use it to undermine labor rights and synthesize misinformation at scale.
I know it's far from an original thought, but what's the point of copyright, anyway?
@xgranade There's still time for them to hound someone to death over libgen while Zuckerberg et al walk away scot free
@mcc That is both incredibly bleak and very very correct.
@xgranade I thought the point of copyright was to protect Disney profits?
Everyone else, including Aaron Swartz, is expendable.
@xgranade if buying isnt owning, pirating isnt stealing
@brahms That's not even wrong per se, but it's kind of missing the point when you're replying to the actual author.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be anti-piracy or anything... but the two key points here are Meta/Zuckerberg undermining my labor rights and misrepresenting my gender.
@xgranade I mean, that was mostly on the "whats the point of copyright" from a consumer pov, you are right.
but I feel this is the only real thing that we can collectively do: remove value for the shitty tech bros and strengthen rights of authors and creators, e.g. by buying from them directly
@xgranade I found my book and two family members in there.
@xgranade
Lawrence Lessig wrote a book on it, really interesting read, it's called Free Culture
@xgranade
This must be incredibly tough for you and I'm so sorry you're being put in this situation.
