Is anyone else working on a Beekeeper’s Quilt? There are 10.5K projects listed on Rav but many are abandoned or finished at much much smaller sizes. This one is amazing and the notes indicate she started in 2015 and finished this year. Page available to Rav members only but here’s a screenshot.

I started my beekeeper ‘s quilt a few years ago but haven’t worked on it consistently. I have 52 hexiflats (I decided not to stuff them) and I need something like 450-550 at a minimum (the pictured one above has 672). It’s going to be a while even if I establish some kind of rhythm like at least a couple every week. (2/2)

It's a good colorwork project and the yarn does all the work. I bought the pattern yarn from knitpicks and am making the medium size. I started it over 10 years ago and I'm about halfway. A square here, a square there...

This person's patterns are incredible, you should check out some of her other stuff.

@consumablejoy I looked it up because I saw ‘quilt’ and didn’t understand why it was taking everyone so long. But I get it now. That’s a lot of knitting! The result is beautiful. I hope you get into the groove on yours, it’ll be a treasure

@inarticulatequilter Even if I never finish it, I’ll be happy with it. I like how each one of the hexagons is a little treasure. And it’s fun watching the bucket of hexiflats fill up over time.

@consumablejoy my sibling helped a friend make one... I think it ended up queen size? Will see if I can find/acquire photos!

@consumablejoy

I like the idea of having such a long term project. How long does it take you to knit on of the hexaflats? And is it hard to do math when you use all kinds of leftover yarn of different weight?

What I mostly dread about a project like this, is the amount of seaming it all together afterwards. I'm not very good at seaming....

@nobyeni Re: yarn weight - most of my personal scraps are fingering weight so I haven’t bothered personally bothered to adjust. However, the math is pretty easy so I definitely could do it if you need to. A quick google search reveals other people already have. (completelyhookedknits.blogspot) Re: seaming, the original pattern calls for tying the puffs together at the corners. I think I will sew mine instead even though I hate sewing.

@nobyeni I plan to actually time how long it takes me to make a hexiflat but for now all I can say is that it’s pretty fast.

@consumablejoy

Most of my scraps and yarn is also fingering, so this really sounds like a great idea for a longterm project that is also short with quick satisfaction in between the longer sweater projects.

There is also another hexagon blanket with similar but larger lace hexagons by Ysolda that I have been considering for a few years...

@consumablejoy Everyone in LSG was so onto that thing when it dropped, and I don't think many got beyond a seat cushion, lol. Kudos to the person whose quilt you showed for sticking it out this long!

@consumablejoy I have bag of the hexigons that I haven't touched in years, but fully intend to go back to at some point.

@merialc @consumablejoy I het the feeling that’s a natural and perhaps even necessary stage in the lifecycle of beekeepers quilts

@consumablejoy

I love it

But I've already an abandoned 10 stitch blanket for my sock yarn leftovers so I've restrained myself so far. 😆

@consumablejoy That is absolutely gorgeous! Do you join as you go? If you do 10 a week you'd be done in less than a year. Are they time consuming?

@KarenStrickholm I don’t join as I go and I definitely don’t do 10 per week. OTOH 10 per week is a totally feasible goal as honestly they do not take long to make at all.

@consumablejoy Ain't no right or wrong on this one... would probably take me a year to knit and five years to sew together! 😂😂🤣

I've been admiring this pattern and all of its finished and unfinished blankets for years and more than once I thought about making one myself. But to be honest, I'd never finish this and therefore I have the greatest respect for people who are taking on this project.
