Rowan is the most unlikely hero you may meet in a fantasy setting. He’s selfish, naïve, and too much of a glutton for his own good. For better or worse he’s thrust into a situation of his own making: he has to save the kingdom that he himself has put into significant peril through his foolishness and hubris. Fortunately he has a lot of forgiving, altruistic, and much better-focused friends to help him achieve this. Forrest surrounds Rowan with a cast of delightful and interesting characters of various classes and temperaments, whose dynamic pushes the action forward in every scene. While the author uses some familiar fantasy elements and character types, they also inject a fresh take on virtually all of the usual tropes. Clover is an especially satisfying part of the heroic party, breaking fantasy-class stereotypes and just being a complete delight throughout the adventure.
