In the face of horrors... Homemade sourdough bagels

Faced with the oncoming disaster being one person feels inadequate. But I am not one person - I am a part of a community. A community that starts in my home, my hearth.

I will bake and cook the favorite foods of my loved ones. So they will also know they are not one person. This will fuel and strengthen them so they can go out and let others know they are not one person.

In the face of horrors, bagels.

@MsHearthWitch @afewbugs question: where do you feel bagels fall on the spectrum of baking effort? My teen is interested in baking some but I was worried they might be quite hard to make? He’s a pretty good baker overall though so I’m wondering if this is more do-able than I’ve convinced myself.

@kimu So personally I find them fairly easy. I do make sourdough bagels, I have only made non-sourdough bagels once.

The big thing probably is bake with weights, not volume. Otherwise it's a total crapshoot.

But if he can make a loaf of bread, he can make bagels no problem. It's essentially like making buns? But you drop them in boiling water for a min before baking. (recipe says like 3 min... that's too much for my taste).

I also don't flip my bagels in the oven.

King Arthur BakingBagelsChewy, delicious bagels, right from your own oven.

@kimu I use honey in place of the malt, seems to work okay.

@MsHearthWitch thank you! He can definitely manage bread, so it feels like he could take this on, with some help. So helpful to hear from someone who has actually made bagels!

@kimu if he has specific questions feel free to poke me and ask. I've made hundreds of bagels at this point
