Neptune 🔱 for #monochromemonday and #fotovorschlag "Monochrom" / "Monochrome"

I've previously talked a little about the history of Bologna's Neptune, but here are a couple of fun facts:
🍆 From a specific angle, Neptune’s thumb aligns perfectly with his groin, creating the illusion of a very happy chap. Supposedly, this was done on purpose as the "virility" of the statue had been previously called into question and the Cardinal asked for more modest proportions to comply with religious regulations at the time. However, Giambologna had the last laugh and saw of way of showcasing Neptune.
🥇 There's supposedly a tradition of walking around the statue twice anticlockwise before exams, to ensure good marks. This is meant to mimic how Giambologna circled the fountain in contemplation and then created the masterpiece- can any Uni students confirm this because I've heard of it, but never seen anyone do it! ✨

Open Seas-a-me for #doorsday 🌊

This is the Fontana del Nettuno in Piazza Nettuno. Neptune is the Roman God of the Seas (and Horses funnily enough.) The bottom of the fountain is covered - because of restoration. It was designed by Tommaso Laureti in 1563 and finished in 1565. The statue of Neptune however wasn't finished until 1566 and was created by Baccion Bandinelli. This photo was taken from inside Palazzo Re Enzo which was founded in 1246. ✨
