Animals boost tropical forests' carbon absorption by aiding seed dispersal
https://phys.org/news/2025-07-animals-boost-tropical-forests-carbon.html paper: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2500951122
"following #deforestation, naturally-regrowing tropical #forests, with healthy populations of seed-dispersing #animals, can absorb up to four times more carbon than similar forests with fewer seed-dispersing animals... by digesting the #seeds and defecating somewhere else, animals can help with the germination, growth, and long-term survival of the plant."
@mlohbihler Yes! Mine have a delightful spicy flavor. They’re grown from seeds I sowed in 2021 - Empress of India Nasturtium Seeds from Sow True Seed, a great company in Asheville, North Carolina. https://sowtrueseed.com/ Although officially annuals, they are perennials here on California’s Central Coast. Both the leaves and flowers are edible. One day someone said to me (knowing my budget is quite meager): It makes me sad you have to eat from your yard. My response: I love eating as much as possible from my yard! It’s great, and I’m grateful!
Behind the ballistics of the explosive squirting cucumber https://phys.org/news/2025-07-ballistics-explosive-squirting-cucumber.html
"To reduce direct competition for space and resources between parent and offspring #plants, there is an evolutionary drive for plants to disperse their seeds as far as they possibly can... the #SquirtingCucumber uses high-pressure explosions to eject its #seeds at high speed across large distances... the seeds can achieve speeds up to 46 km/h and reach shooting distances up to 12 m"
Edit: found a home for the seeds, ty!
Dear masto, anyone of you newly into, or further into chili and would like a collection of seeds from me?
The seeds are probably 10 years old, that's about when my stomach decided against chili forever, but it's always fun to try to germinate old seeds, and I'll pay for shipping! All I want in return is photos next year when you start growing them in January!
They are labeled, and I can look up what I have if you want to know in advance. One of them, my favourite, grows in a gorgeous upright bouquet (it's not ornamental, I got it from the supermarket but never recorded it's name)
I want to send them all to the same person, and not several different people.
editing and boosting because seed catalogs are hitting the mailbox:
Because I was still on the mailing list for some reason, let me remind you to NOT BUY from #BakerCreekSeeds because of their blatant support of right wing ideologies and white supremacy.
Better options: High Mowing Seeds, Sow True Seed, Heritage Seed Market, Alliance of Native Seedkeepers, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Fedco Seed.

One of my favorites from this shoot. There's a softness and warmth that gives me fuzzies. It's also an object I've seen often, rarely paid attention to.

Garrya elliptica, the coast silk-tassel or silk tassel bush. It's native to coastal Oregon & California. Many WA & BC landscapers use it for their gardens work - especially as a windbreaker bush.

Today we received a little packet of four teardrop-shaped #seeds from China.
We do not know why.
My #security-focused or anime-raddled brain I'm not sure which or if there's a difference is filled with possible ways in which this may be an #attack vector. Not the least of which is destabilising of Western Civilisation through sheer paranoia. (Just as well I don't believe in Western Civilisation, eh?)
But I may be missing out on the chance to grow something beautiful?

This morning in the garden…
I’ve been a gardener for many decades and am still in awe of the act of planting a tiny seed and nurturing it into such miraculous beauty
Looks like the oak I started from an acorn has had a bit of a growthspurt in this cold wet summer

Good morning.

The coffee’s bitter this morning—two days of rich Savannah Coffee Roasters brew now replaced by Folgers. Yesterday, my wife, daughter, and three granddaughters went shopping, an outing my granddaughters had been buzzing about. Meanwhile, the guys and I stayed home, though we had our own mini adventure. We swung by Savannah Coffee Roasters, where I picked up three small bags of beans, priced for tourists. The whole stop took five minutes… maybe ten. Afterwards, we had lunch at The Flying Monk, a noodle joint serving dishes from around the world, mostly Asian. I ordered ramen—my go-to comfort food. This time, I just wanted some that hadn’t come out of a packet. It was excellent. Later, I found myself quietly jealous—the ladies stopped at the Peach Cobbler Factory, and I missed out on the sweet finale.

A bucket of seed pods from a single kale plant is quite a lot.
What makes this more unusual is that the plant continues to make new leaves which are soft and sweet, no bitterness at all.
If we were better organized, we'd have a shoe box with empty seed packets and the location of the plants to trace variants.
We don't, .
So, the seed bag is labeled "Kale at the back fence".
