I'm not much of a wildlife photographer, but sometimes I get lucky. Like when this sea lion nosed up to check out the people leaning over the railing of the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. The emerald-green water and the dappled sunlight make this one of my favorite animal portraits.

It is an early morning just after sunrise north of Dunedin, in Otago, South Island, Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Photo shows two fur seals, a grown up mother and a small pup. The mother is looking searchingly and warningly towards the photographer. The pup is looking curious in the same general direction. The seals are in shades of brown fur from light to dark, with some black and white details for the mother, and mostly darker brown for the pup. They both have very visible whiskers. They are on a light grey sandy beach, with a small rock the size of the mummy seal in the background.

The herring spawn has started in some areas on the East coast of Vancouver Island. This photo of sea lions resting in a spawn was taken last year.
