Is there a word/concept that's close to #mitzvah" but that an #atheist #gentile can use? I love the *idea* of a word that encapsulates, "an action that has a positive effect on the world we live in right now," but it's a religious duty to a faith I don't belong to, and I do NOT want to appropriate that. I suppose I can use "good deed," but it doesn't feel like it covers the same ground.

To my friends who have trouble understanding that holidays start the night before:

Think of it like Trash Day. It really begins at sundown the night before, when it is time to drag the cans to the curb, and it ends at sundown the next day, by which time you need to have dragged them back. The night before Trash Day, or "Erev Trash Day", as it is known in our house, is really the most important part of the observance of Trash Day.

Happy Trash Day to all who celebrate!
