I think I can now say I've finished the first version of the shade sail over our back garden. I was a bit scared of shortening the pole in case I cut too much off, but I think it's just right.

This should make the patio drier in the rain and cooler in the sun. It also shades the south wall of the house a bit too.

A large triangular piece of white fabric hung over a small garden. Two corners are attached to a wooden house with pulleys and halyards; the third is supported by a guyed pole.
The corner of the shade sail attached to a pole. The pole is a thin hazel trunk about 2.5m long leaning towards two guy ropes, one of which is visibly attached to a rock.
A football-sized limestone rock has a guy rope attached to it by means of an eye bolt fixed into the rock and a snap hook on the end of the rope.
