Reducing expenses works doubly because it gets you more money to invest and reduces the amount you need. With some basic assumptions it's possible to calculate your years to retirement solely from the percentage of your work income that you can save. Here's a chart from the MMM blog. I saved ~75% and beat these assumptions to retire in less than 4 years.
