Last Sunday saw the lowest tide of the year. On that day it is possible to walk across from the beach at Hannafore to Looe Island. Quite a few people made the short journey during the half hour or so window. #Cornwall #Kernow

Altarnun, Cornwall

Church contains a fabulous collection of 79 bench ends from 1510-1530. This, the first to be seen when entering, says: 'Robert Daye maker of this worke & William Bokyngham Curate John Hodge Clerk'. People assume Robert Daye to be the carver but in class-ridden C16 a lowly carver would not be named above the Curate and Clerk. So Daye is the donor who 'caused to be made' this or all 79 bench ends, though the unnamed carver deserves much credit.

A carved wood bench end with an angel holding a shield on which the words are written. Only the top half of the angel is visible. They have long hair but no halo and their wings rise above their head. On their chest is written IHS.

A colour photo of the chambered tomb, originally a Scillonian-type Entrance Grave which was turned into a kerbed cairn at some point, with part of the later cairn shown behind it. A large capstone can be seen covering the entrance to a dark burial chamber. The hill, Chapel Carn Brea, is named after a 13th century chapel to St Michael of Brea. The hill has great views over much of West Penwith.

Postally used on 19 August 1908 with double circle Camborne cancellation on green halfpenny stamp and sent to Miss M. Rickard, c/o Mrs Thomas, Cliff Villas, Carbis Bay, Cornwall.

Very good condition, with very slight corner bumps, but tiny dint to top centre.
