Robin is back.
There's a tree outside the bedroom window where Robin sings the Good Night Chorus. First time this year. Makes my heart happy.
Paying attention to Nature is so much more satisfying than human activity.

I always enjoy hearing Great Horned Owls calling & even better—hearing 2 GHOs duetting! Here’s my Perpetual Journal art of 2 GHOs duetting, a Cooper’s Hawk, & a small Mexican Poppy plant.

I find myself homesick for the sounds of spring in rural England. It still happens even after twenty plus years living overseas.
Can anyone recommend location recordings or ambient background noise of woodland and countryside in the UK/ northern Europe? Blackbirds, thrushes, chaffinches, etc.
Got BirdNET running locally on my computer in Python!

Today's blog post was my response to Jon Young's What the Robin Knows, which focused on developing good listening habits, in the context of advice about how to listen to birds

I’ve painted birds in my Perpetual Journal so many times recently that I started a blog mini-series entitled All About Birds. Here’s my latest blog post, the 1st in that series:

Studies on birdsong have revealed complex communication systems in avian species, offering parallels to human language development.

Sorry to hear that. Barn Swallows aren't threatened here in #NorthAmerica , but most wild passerines are in decline.
I found the link from the page you sent interesting "swifts vs swallows vs martins"... You have two martin species. But they appear to nest like other hanging mud nest swallows.
Over the pond we have #PurpleMartins that nest in cavities and are very social. If you click on the "Listen" link on this page you'll hear a good recording. It is one of the happiest sounds I know.

I love this little anecdote from the same site...
"Putting up martin houses used to be so common that John James Audubon used them to choose his lodgings for the night. In 1831, he remarked, 'Almost every country tavern has a martin box on the upper part of its sign-board; and I have observed that the handsomer the box, the better does the inn generally prove to be.'"

started the day by listening to a goldfinch singing outside my window. And when I remembered the other things I could/should have been doing, I just...kept listening
