Orjan
The #archery club has started up again after the summer holidays. Last night was the fifth round of the club-internal competition. I missed the first three rounds due to injury, but managed to participate in the fourth, where I shot 175/360 (12 rounds of 3 arrows), which was used to calculate my handicap for the fifth round.

Yesterday I shot 199/360, which after taking handicap into account got me into 6th place out of 13 participants. I'm happy with that, though my fingertips are sore.

Sam :moomin_hattifatteners:
Mr Bait and I both got stupidly sunburned for the first time in decades at today's #archery competition. We're normally really careful, and I'm annoyed with myself because I have so much sunscreen it's silly, but it was hosing when we left home, and then we were shooting when the sun came out. Both came away with medals, though.

Guy Birkin
Had a good 5 hours down the woods today, first shooting the whole course on my own and then doing the first loop again with Stan, one of our older members who's recovering from an operation. #archery
https://annesleyarchers.wordpress.com/2025/07/27/27-07-2025/

Rebecca Banner
I have a new weekend activity - sitting in a field while offspring no.2 is doing a sport. Given that they're 16 and I've managed to get away with not doing this so far, I think I've got away with it lightly. Only 18 months of this and they can come on their own.
#archery

8-bit Archer
#archery

had an absolutely awful day at the course yesterday between an emerging hayfever attack and an utter refusal for my arrows to fly straight.

I've been making progress on getting the aim off issue under control but it appears that the problem isn't just me!

I went to disassemble my bow and pack it away today and on a whim nocked an arrow and gave it a draw cycle to see how my shoulder was feeling the day after...

psarant
Im pretty happy with my shoot this week - I felt relaxed, the draw was smooth and easy, and I was particularly consistent. #Archery #recurve

Anthony Horton
The blinder I'm using is sold as an aid for pistol/rifle target shooters, and is available in translucent, white or black. The translucent version is recommended for guns with open sights, as it allows light into the covered eye so it doesn't mess with your pupil dilation. I think a bow sight counts as a very open sight!

It's very clearly the frame of a pair of clip on sunglasses that's had a piece of plastic attached instead of a pair of tinted lenses. Pistol/rifle shooters are apparently only allowed 30 mm wide blinders in competition so it's an oddly tall but narrow shape out of the box. I didn't like that but it was easy to make some extra holes in the plastic so I could attach it in landscape orientation instead, and that worked much better for me.

https://targetriflesa.com.au/products/ahg-flip-up-blinder-for-glasses

#Archery

Anthony Horton
A very satisfying stabbing-at-a-distance session today. The kid is really getting the hang of it and did much better than last week, and finished up by shooting 192/300 at 20 metres in the scored ends at the end of the session. Meanwhile I was experimenting with using a modified translucent clip-on shooting blinder to force myself to aim with my non-dominant right eye without having to close my left. I think it's more comfortable than closing my left eye, and will keep using it. I ended up shooting 256/300 at 20 metres, just a slight improvement over last week.

#Archery

Anthony Horton
World Archery Rulebook, 11.1.7.1: "... All arrows of every athlete shall be marked with the athlete's name or initials on the shaft..."

I could have done this with a metallic/paint/opaque marker (normal markers don't show up well on bare carbon fibre arrow shafts), or I could have gone all in and got some custom arrow wraps printed. The latter would have required re-fletching all the arrows though, so I went with an intermediate option: custom printed "school labels", in a size intended for use on pens & markers.

They're a bit thicker than I was expecting, but they'll do the job for now.

#Archery

Daniel Pecos Martínez 🇪🇺 🐧
Last day of #archery training until end of August 😔

At lest the last shot was a nice one, guess which arrow was my last 😎

Anthony Horton
The kid and I had another stabbing-at-a-distance session at SOPA today.

Having a two week gap since the last one isn't ideal and the kid was finding it difficult, but with the assistance of the extremely helpful coaches they persevered and by the end they had their form sorted out and their sight dialled in and were doing much better. Meanwhile I tried putting the long rod stabiliser on my bow, and was able to steadily improve my grouping.

I was having to keep my left eye closed throughout my shot process. I still need to talk to a coach about whether I should try a left handed bow instead.

#Archery

Anthony Horton
Also on my archery todo list was re-tying our nock points using serving thread instead of dental floss.

There seem to be about as many different techniques for tying nock points as there are archery YouTubers, i.e. not many, but more than one or two. I decided to try the Nail Knot (as described here https://youtu.be/lnHFnrFFb08) as it looked quick and easy.

It did take me a few goes to get a result I was happy with, but it does at least look a lot better now.

#Archery

Anthony Horton
Another step towards compliance with the kid's preferred archery colour scheme. I have swapped out the standard orange nocks on my arrows with blue ones, and put red nocks on theirs.

As well as making the kid happy this will have the practical benefit of making it much easier for us to tell our arrows apart when collecting them from the target!

#Archery

The Tepid Emperor
Another great session outdoors. Matched my PB at 30yds (282) and then shot a 268 (36 arrows) to complete my Black Outdoor Progress Badge. If only I could repeat this grouping on a regular basis! #Archery #Archer #RecurveArchery

ColesStreetPothole
🚨 Okay, I have an #archery product history challenge! 🚨

I just bought at a barn sale a vintage metal longbow. I bought it because I had never seen one before. It still has the sticker on it—it is a Wham-O Powermaster. The thing is, as far as I can tell, the Wham-O Powermaster was only available in *crossbow* form (recalled due to safety defect), and this is definitely a longbow (not a repurposed crossbow).

Anyone know anything about this product? It is made from an aluminum/magnesium alloy.

The Tepid Emperor
My daughters birthday today so a trip to Merlin #Archery for new arrows. She’s using my old #Hoyt G3 limbs. Then lunch at #Warhammer World. She also picked up some extra paints for a new project. Love the fact she shares two of my hobbies. #DaddyDaughterDay

Anthony Horton
There is also the piratical option of wearing an eye-patch over my left eye when shooting (parrot and peg leg optional). 🏴‍☠️

Alternatively something like this would be less stylish, but probably more practical. They seem to be made primarily for cross-dominant firearms target shooters, but if the customer reviews are any guide they work well for archers too.

https://jhs-eyewear.com/products/clip-on-translucent-eye-cover-for-daywear-glasses

#Archery
