I've learned to only listen to solicited advice.

In my view, not everyone is good at giving advice. My stars, does the interwebs ooze with folks spouting advice all over the place, stating all sorts of opinions and preferences as if they're newly discovered, intrinsic truths about the world.

handling praise

Like criticism, I’ve learned this over time, though for me it was more difficult than taking criticism thanks to my upbringing. I’d downplay any achievement.

NO MORE.

That’s a toxic outlook, a form of negative self-talk. There’s an enormous difference between bragging & taking pride in our accomplishments.

I silently take pride in each step taken, each milestone passed, no matter how minor. It’s creative fuel.

strong emotions

No tricks.

In a Deep 3rd POV craft perspective, it means showing over telling (actions, body language, expressions, word choice, etc).

The art begins long before the scene in question, & it means empathy, humanity…knowing the character.

That happens prior to drafting. I do it via narratives. After developing the character, experiencing their joy/heartbreak, I channel (no imposing) their natural reactions to events.

Indeed, we're perpetually supposed to be the supporting act, and we're very far from shaking that notion out of our collective subconscious. I can't stand seeing that in myself and so try to break through it:
