The #UMassAmherst Associate Provost for Faculty Development came to my house to bring me lunch and deliver a plaque for my Delphi Leadership Award. We had a nice chat in my tent over Indian food. I was very gratified to receive this award in recognition of my service to non-tenure-track faculty.
I always love to see the scarlet pimpernel every year. https://wandering.shop/@stevendbrewer/112575874387878794 But this year #UMassAmherst sprayed it with glyphosphate.
I finally found time to visit the #UMassAmherst Orchard Hill Pavilion which was created to honor service workers. It's nice — better than I expected. https://www.umass.edu/news/article/pavilion-project-orchard-hill-area-projected-open-spring-2024 #WesternMass

After the thunderstorm, the sky over the #UMassAmherst campus pond was spectacular. #WesternMass #SilentSunday
After a marathon 4.25 hour meeting, the #UMassAmherst faculty voted to express no confidence in the Chancellor. He has expressed his recognition that he needs to work to rebuild trust. There's no easy path forward, but this seems like a positive start.

There has been a General Faculty Meeting only one other time in my memory during my 28-year career at #UMassAmherst which was when Jack Wilson, the President of the UMass system, fired John Lombardi, the Chancellor at UMass Amherst, and then tried to establish himself as both President AND Chancellor to advance his wackadoodle "One University" plan, that would have tried to pretend that all of the UMass campuses were just one entity, as a way to game the university rankings. He backed down.
The faculty of #UMassAmherst have called an Emergency General Faculty Meeting for Monday, May 20 to consider a vote of no confidence in the Chancellor resulting from the police action on May 7 to disperse anti-war protesters. https://www.umass.edu/senate/events/general-faculty-meeting-may-20th-2024 #WesternMass
Whew. I just remotely presided over a Special Meeting of the #UMassAmherst Faculty Senate with questions for the Chancellor and administration regarding the events of May 7. It was tense, but productive. Now I think I'll go decompress for a few minutes.

A colleague took a picture of me acting as Presiding Officer of the #UMassAmherst Faculty Senate via Zoom for a meeting held face-to-face.

The Name Game, by Sally Pirie, at #UMassAmherst: "There is so much to say about women, about names, about cis-heteronormativity, history, tradition and patriarchy, about children and bodies and personhood, lots more than I could squeeze into a little comic, but it’s a start." https://sallypirie.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/TheNameGame.pdf
This semester, I'm planning to have my #UMassAmherst Writing in Biology class study millipedes. Because millipedes! #WesternMass
Today, we went to the #UMassAmherst Cold Spring Orchard for its opening day. I bought a peck of apples: one McIntosh, two Akane, three Paula Reds, and a bunch of Zestars. We also got three Ginger Golds, but we ate them on the drive. Yum! #WesternMass
The #UMassAmherst Office of Faculty Development is offering a "Write on Site" drop-in with coffee, water, and snacks. I wonder if they'll have masks…
(Note: I don't really wonder that. )
