Microsoft Hooked the Government on Its Products With Freebies. Could Elon Musk’s Starlink Be Doing the Same?

propublica.org/article/elon-mu

The tech billionaire and Trump adviser “donated” Starlink service to the White House. The move resembles a previous maneuver by Microsoft, which used “free” trials to lock in costly upgrades across the federal government.

Remember 2022:

"… outages from the #Starlink internet systems had caused 'catastrophic' loss of communication for troops on the front lines in Ukraine's war with Russia"

"Ukrainian officials said connectivity issues started when Ukrainian soldiers liberated territory that was once Russian-controlled and moved past the front lines"

The Kyiv Independent · Germany finances Ukraine's use of Starlink alternative Eutelsat, Reuters reportsBy Tim Zadorozhnyy

"#Germany is financing #Ukraine's access to a satellite internet network operated by French company Eutelsat, Reuters reported on April 4, citing Eutelsat CEO Eva Berneke.

The service serves as an alternative to tech billionaire #ElonMusk's #Starlink, which has played a key role in Ukraine's battlefield communications."

Continued thread

The news source mentions that Starlink is already used by the Faroese Defence ships: Tjaldrið and Brimil. Which is quite alarming, as that would give Elon Musk, and the US, complete access* to all the traffic from the ships that are going through Starlink satellites.

Smyril (passenger and cargo ship sailing from Denmark - Faroe Islands - Iceland) also has Starlink already, as well as many Faroese fishing ships.

#Legault, why are you kissing Musk's ass??

«The #Quebec gov has decided to award new contract to install #ElonMusk’s #Starlink high-speed satellite #internet in courthouses in remote regions of the province. The deal comes after U.S. President Donald #Trump launched a #TariffWar with #Canada in early February, then paused it and finally instituted tariffs on #Canadian products, starting with #energy exports and #steel and #aluminum products in early March»
