James against the machine<p>Hello vintage computer friends... I have a lil SGI O2 workstation with a Dallas clock chip — it's the cheeky type of chip with an internal battery. I do Not Like This.</p><p>Are they known to leak? Do we remove the battery from the chip? Replace the chip with something else?</p><p>Thank you, brain friends!!</p><p><a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/vintagecomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputing</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/SGI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SGI</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/O2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>O2</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/silicongraphics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>silicongraphics</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/hivemind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hivemind</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/help" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>help</span></a> <a href="https://noise.j-w.au/tags/thankyousomuch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thankyousomuch</span></a></p>
Johnny Cache<p>My <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>introduction</span></a> to <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Linux</span></a>.</p><p>I was blown away by the <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Battlezone" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Battlezone</span></a> clone <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/bz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>bz</span></a> on cool <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/SiliconGraphics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SiliconGraphics</span></a> machines (with HUGE monitors) at university. That was my first indication that there was a world out there beyond <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/DOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>DOS</span></a> and <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Windows</span></a>.</p><p>One day, I bought <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Caldera" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Caldera</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/OpenLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>OpenLinux</span></a> 2.2 from <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/FutureShop" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>FutureShop</span></a>. And I could play <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/BZFlag" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>BZFlag</span></a>! It was amazing - but something didn&#39;t work. Maybe sound? I forget.</p><p>Years later, I tried <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Mandrake" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Mandrake</span></a> 9.0. I used it solidly until I discovered <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a>. The rest is history.</p>
