Not at all surprised to see Ryka Aoki's LIGHT FROM UNCOMMON STARS as one of this year's two winners of the #Otherwise award, a very deserving win, but boy am I glad the award write up for it acknowledges how the novel is very steeped in trauma to go along with the donuts and fun. Way too many people rec'd that book last year as "delightful" or "a fun adventure" or some such and didn't mention that it's also looks straight on at lots of trauma.

More, more, more!
I recommend short-story collections, anthologies, and podcasts for folks who want to slide back into fiction in 2023.
I've reread the short stories
in Nisi Shawl's Filter House many times. They are intense, condensed, and specific.
