"The massive freighters that ply the Great Lakes are back at work following the early reopening of the Soo Locks for the 2025-26 season, and they're doing it all under the watchful eyes of webcams that track them from Minnesota to New York."

Best of luck to the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program frog surveyors who get to start surveying #wetlands. Frogs are starting to call in our southern portions of the #GreatLakes watershed/

I heard the news on TV and read the newspapers when it happened.

Pictures I took myself of the ruined lifeboat (found empty) on display at the Valley Camp Museum in Sault Ste Marie, the actual ship's bell from the Fitzgerald at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point.

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle here in Detroit has preserved the wheelhouse of the William Clay Ford which (with the Arthur Anderson) was sent out to look for the Fitzgerald while it was still storming. Feels a bit weird to stand in it and think about that night.

I've also attended a memorial service for the Fitz at Old Mariners Church in Detroit and read a couple of books on the subject. Oh yeah, I have the original Gordon Lightfoot album (on vinyl, no less) that contained the song.

The only beauty more awe inspiring than the colours and textures of the North Shore on a gloriously clear day, is the soft eeriness of a low fog along the shore. This time, however, my heart was made content with the superlative brilliance of the crisp spring light on a nearly cloudless day.

This is the first time #CougarCubs have been verified since the big cats were hunted out of existence in #Michigan in the early 1900s, said Brian Roell, large carnivore specialist for the MDNR. Roell, a #wildlife biologist for 26yrs, led the team that verified the cubs.

“It’s pretty exciting, considering this could be the first known cougar reproduction in modern times in the western #GreatLakes states,”said Roell, referring to Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota.
