"The massive freighters that ply the Great Lakes are back at work following the early reopening of the Soo Locks for the 2025-26 season, and they're doing it all under the watchful eyes of webcams that track them from Minnesota to New York."

LATEST ON NEXT STORM SYSTEM:
After a calm end to March, April will start off #stormy for the #Northland as a strong #strom system will push through the #GreatLakes region.
Heavy #snow #showers will be the main focus Tuesday night for everyone. Then we have to watch for mixed #precipitation for some of us on Wednesday...
Water levels on Superior, Ontario, Erie, St. Clair, Michigan, Huron predicted to fall well below last year’s levels through July … All the lakes are expected to remain well above record lows.

Hallo Montag
Wunderschöne, Winterschön... ach`nein Frühlingschön!
Waking up in Chicago,`tis Monday? Monday. Feels as Nonday.
Not nearly as much ice accumulation this time around here in Kitchener-Waterloo / Guelph area compared to cottage country and eastern #Ontario. It is pretty, and not to the extent which brought down tree branches last year, but nobody should be out on the roads unless they absolutely must.

For those interested in the ships that ply the Great Lakes, you can visit https://boatnerd.com/ for current and historical information and photos.
I heard the news on TV and read the newspapers when it happened.
Pictures I took myself of the ruined lifeboat (found empty) on display at the Valley Camp Museum in Sault Ste Marie, the actual ship's bell from the Fitzgerald at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle here in Detroit has preserved the wheelhouse of the William Clay Ford which (with the Arthur Anderson) was sent out to look for the Fitzgerald while it was still storming. Feels a bit weird to stand in it and think about that night.
I've also attended a memorial service for the Fitz at Old Mariners Church in Detroit and read a couple of books on the subject. Oh yeah, I have the original Gordon Lightfoot album (on vinyl, no less) that contained the song.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are expected to change how scientists monitor and model the Great Lakes.

The only beauty more awe inspiring than the colours and textures of the North Shore on a gloriously clear day, is the soft eeriness of a low fog along the shore. This time, however, my heart was made content with the superlative brilliance of the crisp spring light on a nearly cloudless day.

"However, because Lake Superior is a cold, low-nutrient lake with less land development, finding blooms in nearshore locations tells scientists how quickly climate change is impacting the lake."

This is the first time #CougarCubs have been verified since the big cats were hunted out of existence in #Michigan in the early 1900s, said Brian Roell, large carnivore specialist for the MDNR. Roell, a #wildlife biologist for 26yrs, led the team that verified the cubs.
“It’s pretty exciting, considering this could be the first known cougar reproduction in modern times in the western #GreatLakes states,”said Roell, referring to Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota.
