Looking for advice from coop housing lovers! 🏘️

Do you know any cooperative housing initiatives in #Rotterdam?

I might be moving there in September—I’m still waiting for feedback on an application.

Nevertheless, considering the current atmosphere of crisis, I want to be prepared and to start looking as soon as possible!

Ccing my friends who might have some ideas (just where to look would be insightful enough): @sirodoht @fbarbe @leoscarin

Boosts in NL are welcome 💕

You should know:

If you write a private post to someone else on #Mastodon, and you mention another user by their @, that user is added to the conversation and can see that post too!

For example, if you report someone harassing you to an administrator via private mention message, and you tag their account, they can see that!

Never treat private posts on Mastodon like a messenger!
Use actual chat software like #Matrix, #XMPP or #Signal for talking one-on-one, please.

Hidden features on #Mastodon: Perhaps you know the situation: Someone #follows you and suddenly only misbehaves. You wish the person had never followed you.
You can simply and quietly get rid of them: Go to Preferences, click on Following/Followers in the menu and select what you want, in this case "Followers" = people who follow you. Check the person's box. Then click on #Unfollow selected users.
Unfortunately you can't search names or do that directly on profiles.

If you want to try PeerTube, the official PeerTube app IS NOT currently a good way to do it. Due to silly app store rules it is missing key features, and there are much better alternatives.

If you just want to watch and interact with PeerTube videos, it's easiest to do it from within Mastodon. For example try visiting @michellemay

If you prefer to use a PeerTube account, use your PeerTube server's website or web app. Here's how to install web apps: fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a

In a comment on a recent edition of Ghost's AP newsletter, you asked how you get lively fediverse discussions happening in the comments of your #Ghost newsletter.

One answer is, the same way you get them happening on a Mastodon account. You get people to follow @index (for now), so they see your pieces as posts in their fediverse feeds. Also add relevant hashtags to your pieces on Ghost, so they come up in tag searches on servers where there's someone following you.

If you want to, you can set your Mastodon account into follow request mode, so that any follows you get from other people have to be manually approved by you. Here's how to do it:

➡️ fedi.tips/restricting-who-can-

When you do this, a little padlock 🔒 will appear on your profile.

When you receive a follow request, your server website or app will let you know and you can click ✔️ or ❌ depending on whether you approve or deny the request.

Just found a handy advantage of a single user mastodon instance: the 'Live feeds' link simply lists all your own posts, without the replies, boosts to other toots etc. as shown under your own profile page.

Do you want to start uploading to the Fediverse video platform PeerTube?

I've made a guide that tries to answer the most common questions about publishing videos on PeerTube:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-publish-video

The guide covers why you would want to publish on PeerTube, finding a server or setting up your own, how to promote your account, when to upload, accounts vs channels, how often to upload, sponsors etc.

If I've missed something out, let me know!

One of the most overlooked but useful features on Mastodon is "Notes". These let you add private info to profiles which only you can see:

➡️ fedi.tips/what-are-notes-on-ma

A lot of people use notes for keeping track of why they blocked or muted someone, but there are also lots of other purposes.

Notes can be created on the web interface and some third party apps. Just click on the "Add note" section of a profile and type what you want.
