Infoseepage<p>Slept in and stayed local. Still got about 10k steps in visiting the Roscommon museum, a Dominican priory from the 1250's, sat and watched little horses graze and made a second trip out to Roscommon castle to see it in better light. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Roscommon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Roscommon</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>I am in the town of Castlebar for the night. The bar part does not refer to any of the town's many fine drinking establishments. It's a reference to the de Barry family castle which was the 13th century nexus for development in the area. Today, Castlebar is the county seat for Mayo. The castle itself is long gone, so nothing for me to look at, but the name lingers on. I visited several other de Barry associated castles earlier in this trip, including Barryscourt.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Mayo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mayo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>

Infoseepage<p>The world seems particularly crap atm, so I'm going to try and see a particularly cool castle today. No, it won't make the world less crap and it isn't doing a good job of distracting me from that fact, but at least at the end of the day I'll have seen a cool castle and gotten to share it with you all in some small way. Hope that is making your lives a bit less crap. </p><p>Oh, on the subject of crap, should I put together a gallery of garderobes, crap chutes and cesspits I've visited?<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>castles</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/crap" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crap</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>Some telephoto shots of the carved stonework on Lynch's Castle in Galway.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>Going through my snaps taken out the bus window and pretty sure I found the stump of the other Muckinish tower which causes so much confusion in the historical record. It's only .38 miles away from the Shanmuckinish (West) tower I visited according to Google Earth.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Clare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Clare</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>Now ensconced in my hotel a few blocks off Eyre Square. Did 15.5k steps today, most with my full pack. Ouch. Walked through Galway a bit after dropping my pack off and cleaning up a bit. Picked up some groceries. While walking, I passed Lynch's Castle. It's a very fine and heavily ornamented example of an urban tower house. It was built in the late 1500's by the Lynch family, one of the most powerful of the 14 families which controlled medieval Galway. These days, it's a bank branch. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>castles</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>Good day, but very hard on my body carrying my pack around all day. </p><p>Visited Dunguaire and Oranmore castles. Here is Dunguaire:</p><p>The Irish name for the first means "Fort of Guaire." King Guaire of Connacht supposedly had a residence here in the 7th century.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Galway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Galway</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>
Infoseepage<p>The castle has a cluster of old buildings around it and a still visited well with a cross. Not sure if it counts as a holy well or whether it was just the castle's water source. </p><p>The castle also had not one, but two Garderobe chutes, so life here was pretty good by the standards of the day.</p><p>Would have loved to have gone in this one, but the door was padlocked. No idea if they open it in the summers or not. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ireland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ireland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Clare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Clare</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Castles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Castles</span></a></p>
