April 3rd, 12pm-1pm Eastern (UTC -4): "Understanding AI: What it Can and Cannot Do", an online author event featuring Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor, authors of "AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can’t Do and How to Tell the Difference".

(The authors of this book are a computer science professor and graduate student at Princeton I've already read the book & liked it, though I think the authors go too easy on the large social-media sites & their inability to moderate effectively. They argue that predictive AI is largely a failure and faces inherent limits, and AI content moderation can't keep up with users, but generative AI is more likely to be useful, especially when it's overseen or verified by a human. They also call for judicious regulation, but of course we're not going to get any of *that*... well, maybe in the EU.)

A year after the #KeyBridge collapse and a week after the NTSB chastised MdTA for failing to conduct recommended analysis on the bridge's safety, it still seems no #Baltimore reporter has reached out to former governor Larry Hogan or any of his senior staff about why the analysis wasn't conducted before expanding the port to bring in bigger ships.

Frau Professor Trash Wheel from today's baltimore_spaces photo walk!

The #Baltimore trash wheels are an elegant solution to litter that makes it through the city's waterways into the harbor via solar and water powered conveyer into a hidden dumpster, a project that has since been copied in multiple cities around the world. They are part of an extensive effort to make the harbor healthier for fishing and swimming again.

We put googly eyes on them.

TIL Professor Trash Wheel in Canton is maintained with help from the nearby Pompeiian olive oil processing company, and that's why her eyes are green.
