The thing that gets me about this political moment is how many, many chances those of us in the US had to stop this.
Even just in recent memory:
We could have not elected Reagan.
We could have done something when GWB stole the election.
We could have done something about the DHS, ICE, the TSA, and every other horrific organization GWB created.
We could have done something after Sandy Hook.
We could have stopped COVID.
We could have defunded police.
@xgranade the majority really fell for Thatcher's nonsense about "no such thing as a society, just your abusive husband, so shut up."
@xgranade As a furriner and alien it’s pretty easy to see the direction travelled. As a kiwi, in particular, we have done much the same since we drank the free trade kook-aid, and the only reason it’s been less noticeable is because we’re insignificantly tiny.
@xgranade We could have funded Cash for Caulkers, riffing on Habitat for Humanity to make residences more energy-efficient.
We could have treated COVID-19 as a call to improve indoor air quality standards for everyone.
Either major US political party could have leaned into patriotic promotion of community disaster preparedness.
We could have acted on the Panama Papers and the Paradise Papers.
We could have audited rich taxpayers' returns.
