woof, okay, s1e2 was all fun and games but I'm 2 minutes into the third episode and we've got some real problematic tropes flying around here. the "tribal" civilization who happen to look just like African humans can't BeLiEvE that tasha yar, a woman, could be a security officer! #TNGwatch
s1e4, The Last Outpost: trek really was so prescient. On making first contact with the ferengi, Picard and daimon tarr immediately start by saying "pix plz," even though this aired years before AOL instant messenger #TNGwatch
s1e5, Where No One Has Gone Before: Star Trek may have predicted many inventions and trends, but let us hope that fashion is not one of them #TNGwatch
s1e7, Lonely Among Us (my numbering was off because the pilot was a double episode): Data is already acting VERY human. Picard made one offhanded remark about Sherlock Holmes, and that's all it took for Data to go full fedora and act smugly superior to the only woman in the room #TNGwatch
s1e8, Justice: WOW. So s1e3 wasn't a fluke. I am *astonished* at this show's determination to out-horny Captain Kirk.
Also... is this seriously going to be an episode where a young teen boy has his sexual awakening? Really?? #TNGwatch
Oh, and as far as some more substantive commentary -- Q's motives make *no damn sense* in this episode. Nobody's do! Why does Q play the part of temptation? Why is it bad for Will to use his new powers responsibly? I got real wide-eyed when Riker mentions "all of [his] long talks" with Wesley, yikes. And like, they just sail off into the sunset laughing, never contemplating how goddamn *weird* it was that time Riker revealed their innermost desires? #TNGwatch
s1e23, "Skin of Evil." I'm truly shocked that Tasha dies so early in the series. She was around for so little time that I don't feel like her death had much impact. And I mean... Yeesh, is there a less dignified way to go out than at the hands of a grumpy sludge monster? #tngwatch
Also, just a general note: how the hell is Starfleet expected to construct a meaningful coordinates system in space, where literally everything plus space itself is constantly in motion? #tngwatch
s1e24, "We'll Always Have Paris." Now why the heck is a team of highly advanced 24th-century scientists calling this thing a "planetoid" when CLEARLY it does not exhibit hydrostatic equilibrium? My suspension of disbelief is ruined!!! #TNGwatch
Same episode -- Jesus, man, can we get someone to install a self esteem chip for this guy over here??? #tngwatch
s1e25, The Neutral Zone: "Hey, d'ya mind turnin' down the A/C? I'm tryna record a podcast in here!" #tngwatch
s2e1, "The Child": uhhhhhhh why is everyone treating this supernatural pregnancy as though it were completely normal, rather than the Nostromo-level body horror it actually is??? #tngwatch
s2e2, "Where Silence Has Lease": Woof. That last episode was... Real bad. Anyway, is this a crossover episode? Because it looks like the away team just landed on Dagobah. #tngwatch
Strange, is the show trying to set up something about Worf's heritage and aggression? Cos none of that really paid off in this episode.
THIS, on the other hand, WAUGH! I screamed! #tngwatch
s2e3, "Elementary, Dear Data": Star Trek is often referenced as an optimistic, even utopian vision of the future. Well, maybe, but it seems that even in a 24th-century utopia we still have chauvinists slinging slurs. 🙁 #tngwatch
So like... It's eventually going to be revealed that holodeck projections are living, sentient beings and this has all been an enormous ethical conundrum, right?? #tngwatch
Oh, that's literally the episode. But uh they don't exactly deal with the ramifications, do they? #tngwatch
s2e5, "Loud As A Whisper": ugh. Pulaski is that relative who tells you that you could be so pretty if only you lost a little weight, then swears she was just doing you a favor #tngwatch
s2e8, "A Matter Of Honor": uhhhhhHHHH if this were the first thing someone said to me when I boarded a new ship I would get right the fuck back into the transporter and blast my atoms right into cold empty space #tngwatch
"... About how incredibly tubular the Enterprise is now that we have a dedicated Tron room?" #tngwatch
@trappleton There's actually a running theory in the fandom that Riker never gives up his powers here, which would make him one of the Q and probably immortal. It's fun to think about.
Also, lord, the innermost desires thing is so awkward. Adult Wesley is vaguely terrifying, and I feel super embarrassed on Worf's behalf for having his sex goals shown to everyone.
@hummingrain OH damn I am gonna get *all up* in that fan theory, I love that. 😄 And adult Wesley, seriously, right? My skin crawled and I think I took a break from watching after that whole episode.
@trappleton
Writers: all they’re doing is discovering stupid stuff we need real TENSION
Writers: throw a character with 90s beliefs in the mix
Writers: but people will figure out we’re preaching directly at them
Writers: WE HAVE BROKEN THE FOURTH WALL BRILLIANT
@trappleton God I love Okona's costume design so much
@hummingrain he looks awesome, and is charming the pants off everyone, but I'm ten minutes in and very worried that he's gonna waste all that goodwill trying to scam the crew 😬
@hummingrain okay, for once the dashing rogue *did* have a heart of gold. This show is great 👌
@trappleton My understanding is somebody being petty after behind-the-scenes conflicts.
@naga ah, I shoulda guessed. Figures!
s1e14, Angel One. There's a lot to unpack here, but I do find it hilarious that the objectified, spineless man from an alien world is named "Trent" #tngwatch
