I need to watch more Studio Ghibli
bloodinthemachine.com/p/one-of
I don't expect film/TV reviews from @bcmerchant.bsky.social but I love it. Fiction is culture: it's one of the ways we express our values. It's one of the reasons AI is such a soulless affront,why it's theft at every level.

Blood in the Machine · The powerful, kid-friendly tech criticism of one of the best Studio Ghibli filmsBy Brian Merchant

@susankayequinn

It’s a movie that holds up wonderfully well! I’ve always been pissed off at the English language dub, which is generally wonderful (features Mark Hamill as the bad guy!), but completely flubs the pivotal climactic line of the movie. In English, explaining why the lost civilization abandoned their high-tech island, our heroes say, “you can’t live without love! But in the original Japanese, they say, “you can’t live apart from the Earth.” Pretty wild diff! (Sorry if the OP mentions this below the paywall.)

@inthehands he does mention it, and I'm glad you're confirming — I really do need to see the film now

@susankayequinn
It’s great! Perhaps the most straight-up adventure-with-bad-guys of all the Miyazaki movies, and it •still• defies categorization and yields layer after layer of treasure.

Also, have you seen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind? Another one for our times.

@inthehands I haven't — I've really only seen a couple and it was a while ago. I need to fix that.

@susankayequinn
It’s worth just running his whole directorial output, honestly.
