@susankayequinn
This is very interesting, I ordered it. Greetings from Germany
@Nachtschattenspender Thank you! You might also be interested in the #solarpunk novels of mine that have been translated to German :) https://susankayequinn.com/series/nothing-is-promised-in-german
@susankayequinn just went to import this on Storygraph so I can add it to my tbr there!
@bluestocking thanks for reminding me of that site! I've been meaning to check it out... will do that now...
@bluestocking "Our machine learning AI is like your trusted go-to friend for book recommendations."
Ok not a fan of this — I'm very anti-AI and avoid feeding the machine whenever I can
@susankayequinn oof, that's a bummer! I didn't realize they'd started implementing AI at all. I use them because I don't want to use an Amazon-based reading tracking site (Goodreads). I'd be curious to know whether that "machine learning AI" is more similar to the kind of algorithm one might expect on something like TikTok or YouTube or the kind of LLM-based ick that everyone's squeezing in everywhere.
@bluestocking well they've got all kinds of books of mine that are already unpublished (so they're scraping from somewhere that's IDK piracy?) and they have "AI summaries" which are *above* my descriptions of the book which is very very annoying as an author. I write the descriptions because that's what I want the reader to see — they're free to read reviews (and everyone's doing AI summaries cuz I guess they don't want to read human reviews ) but prioritizing the AI is nothing I want part of.
@bluestocking unfortunately just "not being Amazon" doesn't mean they aren't doing all the horrible things the tech industry does
Ah, this is the one I've been thinking of that I need to check out: https://joinbookwyrm.com/ "This proudly anti-corporate and decentralized platform can connect with other decentralized platforms like Mastodon"
@susankayequinn Bookwyrm is great! I've been using that for about a year now, too.
@bluestocking oh cool! And they have a solarpunk instance
I'm gonna check it out...
@bluestocking wait so... is it like Mastodon in that you join one instance of bookwyrm (say the solarpunk one) but you can still interact with everyone? Which instance are you on? I'm wondering if I should join the main one or the solarpunk one...
@susankayequinn Yes, you pick an instance! I'm on sfba.club, the one run by the folks who run the mastodon server I'm on. I haven't had any issues with following or finding people on other Bookwyrm servers, though!
@bluestocking cool, thanks!
