Time for an post!

My name's Julie. I'm a musician () and a . I have two kids and two cats. I've worked in my entire adult life, including a decade as an at a children's science museum. Now, in a move I never expected but also find unsurprising, I run the children's ministry program at an church.

Let's talk about , , , , or whatever you're passionate about!

“The largest known plant on Earth - a seagrass roughly three times the size of Manhattan - has been discovered off the coast of Australia.

Using genetic testing, scientists have determined a large underwater meadow in Western Australia is in fact one plant.

It is believed to have spread from a single seed over at least 4,500 years.”

The points in my Aurora Blue shawl may look complicated, but let me tell you a little secret: they're easy as pie! I made them by pulling the edges of the shawl into points during blocking. The pattern includes links to a photo tutorial showing how I block this shawl shape, as well as to the various stitches & techniques used 😃

Today, for obvious reasons, I recommend Catherynne M. Valente's love letter Space Opera. It's a super fun novel about the earth joining an intergalactic song contest represented by a washed up glam rock band. Its countless nods to the Eurovision Song Contest, including chapters named after previous winners, are just what you need to set the mood. It is also the best possible gift for your Eurovision party host.

My submission: Perry (orange fluff) and Gozer (calico) napping together on my new blanket.

I took my littlest one bowling today after parent-teacher conferences. He had so much fun! And to be honest, I did too.

Interesting blog post from National Museums Scotland with historical examples of mending, both skilled and not, to inspire us all to take up our darning needles!

SCOTUS reactions

I've just...stayed off of socials today. I'm afraid to look at FB. I'm sure there's not much of value to find on Birdsite. And even here, I'm seeing sadness and anger, of course, but - what is there to do? I guess that's the crux of it: today, there is very little that can be done. But I suppose it's better to grieve together.

Me, watching a movie, constantly reaching for IMDB and Wikipedia:

Truly, I am a child of the Pop Up Video generation.

Wandering Shop friends, someone from another instance asked for an invite to here. I'm brand new, though, and don't know the how those are given or if there are criteria! Can someone help me out?

Did I stay up too late playing Cozy Grove? Probably. But I love my ghost bears.

I'm using the Toot! app and I just discovered "Relax" - it showed me an animation of a beautiful night sky with twinkling stars.

Hello Mastodon! I'm excited to try out a new platform. I'll introduce myself better once I get my bearings, but this will do for a first post.

Wandering Shop

The Wandering Shop is a Mastodon instance initially geared for the science fiction and fantasy community but open to anyone. We want our 'local' timeline to have the feel of a coffee shop at a good convention: tables full of friendly conversation on a wide variety of topics. We welcome everyone who wants to participate, so long as you're willing to abide by our code of conduct.
