Raise your hand if your online friends are often better than your offline friends.

@phildini The thing about off-line "friends" (sometimes really unjustly upgrades from acquaintances*) is that muting and blocking is a LOT harder. And our hardware privileges connection with them (and that privileging is supported by loads of societal software).

* yeah, a toot with a footnote: Germany's word for this is "Bekannte", and they allow a much wider buffer between "stranger" and "friend".

I've noticed that my online friendships tend to be predicated on common interests whereas offline friendships are predicated on proximity. Once proximity ceases, so does offline friendship. Online friendship lasts as long as the common interest does.
