Off to see Bat Out Of Hell after work tonight.
Saw it in early previews and I am really hoping for two things -
* The choreography/costuming for the police has been reworked to be less goofy
* The bury your queer storyline is fixed
Oh... the "Bury Your Queers" storyline was actually worse than I thought. The guy in love with the male lead is "frozen" at a younger age than the rest of them so is infantalised throughout - including in his expressions of love. He is the traitor. He is killed (which fuels an immediate action from the lead).
So, there have been some changes... Tink doesn't actually get killed... it just looks like it... woo. (Nearly) Bury Your Queers
And the casting for this tour - Tink is played by a woman. I guess the actor could be non-binary, but I can find *nothing* to support this at the moment and much more suggesting woman.
I wonder whether Tink will still be played as a guy or whether he'll now be a woman and writing out all the queers from the Lost Boys...
It does look like the set has changed a bit... I'm sure we had the band in the pit - the motorbike crashed into it and the conductor came out looking dishevelled I am sure... That allowed Falco's home to be where the band now is (more or less)
Nothing extra clarifying Tink yet...
Couple next to me: "not sure that, if you asked me, I could name a Meatloaf song"
Well, this is definitely the show for you...
And I managed to sit in the wrong seat (23 instead of 26)... D'oh
Hmmm... Riot was better, but it feels like it's lost some energy (it's not that the performance is bad but it feels like a performance) overall compared to previews I saw way back when...
Motorbike static 8-(
Tink still unclear...
Some dances make me think of boy band or K-Pop choreography which is weird with Meatloaf songs...
But I do have to say, I thought Zahara (who I think was played by an Understudy) was fantastic. Her rendition of Two Out of Three Ain't Bad was glorious.
Also Objects in the Rearview Mirror was grand.
And, to Tink... It's complex... Pronouns not used for them. Understudies are male and female. Tink took a bow at the end, not a curtsey... I think Tink is male or non-binary (but nothing made of it) the key part of the character is they are frozen at a younger age then the rest of The Lost...
Assuming this, still problematic queer storyline.
And Tink lives? That's just odd.
And such a shame Who Needs The Young was excised except a tiny line referencing a song noone will actually know as it was written for the show... But it is so good...
