Ages ago when we were closing down our coworking space, my friend gave me his old Kindle Keyboard. It wasn't charging. I wanted it as a display piece.

It's been on a shelf for all this time with the “Your battery is dead" screen. So I decided to see if I could bring it back to life just so it'd be a living display piece.

The old battery was... oof.
A little poking and opening it back up and boom! new battery works. Hello there Mr. Elison

Now I'm going down a rabbit hole to find the old Jailbreaks. Needed to update the Kindle's clock. So I can update it to the latest FW. For no reason other than I want the latest firmware LOL

Welp. Hit a snag on my rabbit hole. None of the known root passwords work so can’t get in and fix the clock. Womp womp.

@jwilker The image shows two white lithium-ion batteries placed on a blue cutting mat with a grid pattern and measurement markings. The mat features white lines and numbers indicating measurements in millimeters, such as "18x10mm" and "17x12mm." The batteries have black connectors on one end, with the larger battery on the left and the smaller one on the right. The larger battery has a distinctive black line pattern on its surface, while the smaller battery has printed text on it, including "PFC-J702-002-LC." The background includes a portion of a laptop keyboard, suggesting a workspace setting.

The image shows an Amazon Kindle e-reader placed on a granite countertop. The device is white with a black screen displaying a black and white image of Ralph Ellison, a prominent American author. The Kindle's screen also shows the text "Ralph Ellison" and a prompt to "Slide and release the power switch to wake." The device features a physical keyboard with round buttons and side buttons labeled "PREV PAGE," "NEXT PAGE," "HOME," "MENU," and "BACK." A charging cable is connected to the bottom of the device. The background includes various items, such as a magazine with a nature scene and a colorful sticker with a "Colorado" design.

The image shows two white lithium-ion batteries placed on a blue cutting mat with a grid pattern, commonly used for precision work. The mat has measurements in centimeters, with numbers ranging from 7 to 15 visible. The batteries are partially disassembled, with one battery having a barcode and text "170-1012-00 REV C" printed on it, indicating its model and revision. The other battery has the text "PIN: 170-1012-00 REV C" printed on it. The batteries are connected to a device, likely a laptop, as part of a repair or replacement process. The background includes a portion of a laptop keyboard, suggesting the work is being done on a laptop. The batteries are positioned with their connectors facing upwards, ready for reassembly or replacement.
