Anyone know a kid-friendly #mastodon instance?
@sillystring For all we know there may already BE one, but it's so hard to search instances...
@maloki Do you know who runs instances.social? Any way of getting a keyword search added? (I'm the 99999th person to ask this, aren't I?)
This website is maintained by @TheKinrar Source code and issues on GitHub.

:)
@maloki Thank you! @sillystring @TheKinrar
@jessmahler @maloki @TheKinrar
I see this: https://github.com/TheKinrar/mastodon-instances/issues/46
Text search on the instance description might be useful for new users. #mastodon
@sillystring Even for non-new users I believe.
I mean if I can search for servers with cool descriptions it'd be so much easier for me to highlight interesting servers etc. :)
@jessmahler Oh, jeez. That's a legal minefield.
Pretty sure you'd need a database of parental authorizations and severed from the Fediverse.
@pnathan I want to disagree but we're living in a world where parents get arrested for letting their kid's play at the playground...
@jessmahler Not that.

Essentially a masto node designed for children is a risk point for grooming (which is more common than one might guess).
And, kids have limited common sense.
It would require pretty epic moderation, and almost certainly the general vaguely nsfw'ishness of the fediverse would force defederation.
It's not infeasible, but I think it'd require essentially a parental coop to babysit.
@pnathan Fair enough. Thanks for the info.
@jessmahler @pnathan wow that sounds really tricky. Obviously anyone should be allowed to use Mastodon...
You know what? Facilitate kids running their own Masto instance.
@jessmahler @pnathan I'm thinking that schools could run up their own, but use the whitelisting, as awoo.space does, and only federate with other schools.
It'd be a great way to teach kids about this kind of stuff so they are prepared for the new era of internet
@maloki @jessmahler Schools could probably do it, for sure.
The level of diligence for the <13 set is unlike anything else in the USA in terms of permissions and data management.
Hm. I may pitch this to my kid's school. He cyber schools and they are always looking for ways to get the kids more ways to hang out and interact outside of class time. They also have a lot of comp-related extras (coding classes and such).
They could start by running an instance out of each local office and have a mini network, connect with other schools if any decide to do the same.
@jessmahler I think
@vahnj runs glitch social now, but can probably add some useful information about white listing for Federation etc.
@jessmahler I wish. If there is one, it is most likely not federated. Hence not listed on instances.social
@jessmahler
That's a good idea. Somebody should make an instance for minors.
