@Canageek I got through it, but have only the vaguest memories of it and couldn't get into the second one at all.
I recently heard someone describe is as "10,000 things wrong with colonialism: a novel" or something like that, which put it on my "probably worth re-reading list".
@jessmahler Dune isn't an advanced society, it's a dark age following an AI apocalypse and a religious jihad, and the feudalism is "solved" by even more religious fundamentalism controlled by the God-Emperor Leto II. Nobody holds up anything from Dune as an idealistic place to live or a fucking role model!
#BlackPanther is brutal and anachronistic when set in our civilized, somewhat democratic world.
@jessmahler Dune is massively technologically regressed from the pre-Butlerian era. Ix is loathed in that setting for making new machines. Mad Max is not "advanced" just because they still have old cars.
The Fremen are indeed ideal… blatantly like Bedouins are held up as an ideal by Muslims. That doesn't mean anyone's going to model their lives on them or use them to inspire kids to stay in school.
