Ah, fuck. Just realized I'm going to need to figure out orbits and planetary alignmnet shit in order to get travel time right.
Somedays, I wish I was one of those writers who didn't worry about getting stuff right. Mars is the next planet, right? Fancy sci-fi engines, make it a couple days, done.
No, Nope, can't do it. Gotta do the actual math. It'll drive me crazy otherwise. #sff #actuallyautistic
@Food Eh. This is going to me Firm Sci-Fi. I'm not going to make an attempt to come up with an explanation for how the tech works. I'm just not good at tech and it would break my brain.
But I can set a max acceleration and max speed for my hand-wavium sci-fi engines and do the math for travel time. Even then I'll probably still get some part of the math wrong bc of what I don't know about orbital mechanics. But it'll be better than nothing.
@jessmahler I am for hire for this exact sort of thing, if you'd like to delegate! ∑:D
@qwyrdo Honestly, I'd love to but no way I can justify spending money on something I can good enough myself to get by. Too many things we already can't afford to pay for that I CAN'T do.
@jessmahler I so understand that! Should your situation change & you want some hardcore planetary science advice, though, do please keep me in mind!
@qwyrdo I definitely will! Do you have a website or anything? I know a few other authors who might be interested.
@jessmahler Not yet, but soon! I'm meeting with a small business specialist affiliated with the state Thursday; hopefully I can get a small grant to get things started.
(One advantage to being #actuallyautistic: access to voc rehab services & incentives to becoming a business owner ∑;3)
@jessmahler I feel your pain, and this is why I'll never write hard SF. I have to be ~precise~ and ~accurate~ and it's much easier to do that when I'm making up the rules. And involves less math, which my brain does not hold well.
There are still rules, of course. They're just MY rules.
@jessmahler makes the story much more exciting! Hard Scifi is my favorite
