Allow me to set the scene. It's late at night and you're starting the last hour of a multi-hour trip home. You already knew that starting the drive so late instead of spending one more night away from home was ill-advised, but as your blinks become longer and slower you're having significant doubts about your ability to finish the trip. Just as you're debating the merits of stopping for a nap, the unthinkable happens. You nod off, cross the double-yellow line, and crash into an oncoming vehicle.
I'm building cabinets for our dining room, and they're coming along okay. I see nothing but the flaws, but, I'm reasonably happy with this first one despite that... #xp
The new Doctor Strange movie is a very good, highly enjoyable Marvel movie, and a FANTASTIC Raimi flick. If you're into both of those things, this is going to be your jam.
But don't bring your young kids to this. Some serious trauma happened in the theater tonight. #xp
Old stories kept children on safe paths or threatened gory ends for simple disobedience.
New stories suggest that children question the paths, and celebrate sensible amounts of disobedience.
So as an avid reader of stories both old and new, I was a little uncertain how to handle the fairy ring that appeared in my kitchen.
Calling the landlord was a secondary thought. I placed some old shoes in. Then one foot, just to see what would h

Prosperity gospel is alive and well in the US. I hear this sentiment or one like it so terribly often: the rich earned their way there through hard work and brains, the poor deserve it by being lazy and dumb.
Nevermind that the VAST majority of the rich got there (or got their start) through generational wealth, poverty is a black hole that sucks you in and doesn't let go easily, and actual rags to riches stories are so rare as to be almost non-existent.
Being rich isn't noble. #xp

How can something be so unsurprising and still so disappointing? I'm sickened; both by the decision and the tactics used to get us here. "Settled law", my ass. #xp
Okay, it's time to tell new users a secret about Mastodon.
Mastodon is (whispers) part of a much bigger network 😮
Mastodon servers use an open standard called ActivityPub to talk to each other. That's how you interact with people on other Mastodon servers.
But, dozens of other federated networks also use ActivityPub, so (this is the good bit!) you can follow people on these other networks from your Mastodon account!
For example:
PixelFed (https://pixelfed.org) is a photo sharing network, here's a random example account @Iancylkowski
PeerTube (https://joinpeertube.org) is a video sharing network, with a p2p system that allows videos to go viral even on small servers, here's a random account @craftykat
BookWyrm (https://joinbookwyrm.com) is a social reading site, an open alternative to Amazon's Goodreads, here's a random account @mouse
Together, Mastodon and these other services form... The Fediverse

Today marks 13 years married to my wife, and nearly 16 years since date 0.5--our trial date to see if a date would be a good idea. I'm grateful every day that she tolerates my shenanigans and continues to be the best partner I could hope for. ❤️😍😘 #xp #LuckyNumber13
PSA: The "verified" symbol you see on Twitter etc means absolutely nothing on Mastodon or the Fediverse. On here, symbols like are just custom emoji that anyone can use and put after their name. Don't be fooled! 😁
There are ways to verify your identity on here, but the symbol is not one of them.
The easiest way to verify your identity is if you have a website that people already know is yours. You can paste a special code into your website which will verify your address and it will turn green on your Mastodon profile (see here for instructions: https://mstdn.social/@feditips/106274105538953001).
Alternatively, you can set up a server as a subdomain of your known website address. For example, the European union set up their own Mastodon server at https://social.network.europa.eu, and we know it really is the EU because the server address is part of the EU's well-known europa.eu domain.
I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
After a last minute, surprise, 40h trip to Syracuse, Ger and I are very ready to be home...we just need a plane... #xp
One of the largest inefficiencies in our current system of fediverse moderation is the lack of shared blocklists.
Individual instance administrators have to keep an eye on the fediblock hashtag and then individually add instance suspensions. This is vastly inefficient.
I propose a system akin to DNS RBLs in the email world where is a centrally distributed blocklist that an instance can subscribe to which then either notifies the admin about new additions or outright suspends.

@skipfordj anyone who doesn't like your boosts can turn off boosts on your profile page
Don't mind me, I'm just testing using http://moa.party to crosspost from Mastodon to Twitter rather than the reverse... #xp
A rude awakening after some twos... #xp
