I know I'm close to full burnout as I turn down the fourth consultancy request in as many weeks because I simply can't stomach adding to the list of folks that pay me for expertise that they then largely ignore. I know it's all part of the game, but exhaustion makes it raw.

The fun part of burnout is that it robs you of the enthusiasm, creativity, and perseverance that get you through usually. Even minor stumbling blocks knock you on your ass. It presents, to me at least, as depression is often described.

The upshot is, I need to catch up on sleep and take time to recharge...instead...I am going to load up on caffeine and get through the stuff people are counting on me for. This is, ironically, going to affect sleep quality.

Which affects work quality.

The goal of this incredibly self-indulgent post isn't whining for whining's sale (although, I'm not above doing so), but to share that if you're struggling right now, you're not alone and you're not broken--at least not more than I. A low bar perhaps, but a bar nonetheless!
