It occurs to me that the reason it's so easy to think about how we would re-write/re-tell a certain story (say, a given Star Wars movie) is that we've already had a lot of the work done for us. A big part of drafting is making versions of the story you then change. By working from what is, to our view, a bad draft, we only have to worry about the changes and not making it from whole cloth. That energy has been spent for us.

@hummingrain I think about this a lot. But I also think it's a reason fanfiction is so powerful sometimes. You get writers completely rebuilding and reimagining existing stories into sharper, better versions.
