Thanks everyone, for a wonderful #yarnuary, and I hope you'll remember to share your #fiberarts work with us.
Optional theme for February is to try a technique youβve been meaning to learn, or to practice something at which you are still a beginner. I plan to find my cards for #tabletweaving and work on getting into better practice.
@Lapis that's tricky for me to answer - I've been sewing since I was six and I don't remember my order for learning things very well.
My general advice for crafts is to start with small things that can be finished quickly, and to gradually add new techniques to them.
In sewing, for me, that means things like bags or baby/doll clothes.
What have you made so far, what are you most comfortable doing, and what would you actually want to make next?
@Lapis aside from that, finding a resource with a lot of instructions for different things is often helpful for me.
Do you have a basic sewing book? Would you like a recommendation? There's probably good blogs out there, but I haven't looked for them yet.
Hm, hm, hm. Sewing techniques that have stood me in good stead: hemming by hand, using bias tape, edge stitching, putting in zippers, and seam finishing: pressing, learning to grade seams with multiple layers, zig-zagging the edges;
@gannet Iβve had a guitar for a month now. But Iβm getting nowhere with it. Sounds like a possible February objective.
@fir Yay scarves! Ooh, drop stitch patterns are nifty. Do you have any particular patterns in mind?
@fir my thoughts immediately went to Clapotis - there's a bunch of people who've made it in bulky yarn, see what you think? https://www.ravelry.com/projects/search#sort=best&pattern-link=clapotis&view=cards&weight=bulky
@fir excellent!
@gannet I'm going to try converting a pattern for a pullover into a cardigan. How hard can it be? π
@erica thereβs certainly a bunch of instructions for that online! I think it should be just fine.
@gannet Thanks for organizing it! Super fun. π
@pursuitofnerdiness good to hear! I was pleasantly surprised by how little work it was, so Iβm really glad it was a good time.
@gannet I'm still pretty bad at sewing. Do you have a recommendation on how to improve at that? I mean, other than practice, I mean I know I need to practice. I mean, learning techniques.
