one of the simpler elements of community building, rather than reaching out to find new people, can be deepening connections with family. this is esp. relevant for me as a white person from a poor/working class background where competition in the name of capitalist success often trumps connection

so all that being said I'm glad for a tiny commitment I've made the last three weeks to call my mom every Thursday. sounds small but it's huge

I'm hoping one day to expand that to a more frequent and flexible schedule but for now it's about establishing comfort with contact. I love my mom, don't get me wrong. but I let myself get too easily swept up in things that feel "productive"

ties in with what I'm working on with my therapist: building my tolerance for uncertainty (in this case, being unsure whether my call will be wanted—an unfounded but real uncertainty)

anyways, this is just to say that community building doesn't have to be a big production, it can be as small as reaching out in love to the people you already know, with no/neutral expectations

@dani_p This is beautifully put. Thank you.

@dani_p Nothin' comes immediately to mind! I'm not white, so my experience is probably a bit different than yours, but I think you've hit the nail on the head in that the whole capitalist hellscape naturally pushes us away from people.

(I'm an academic, and the whole false concept of "meritocracy" leads to competition when there should be collaboration...)

Nice to meet you, too!

@hafnia ex-academic here, hiiiiii, I definitely hear you on the meritocracy point, it seems increasingly that "merit" = "productivity" in a commodified / volume-based sense, which is not cool? and does not attend to human needs?

I hope you're doing ok & finding connection where you want it at least? in ways that work for you? it can be so isolating

@dani_p Re: productivity...RIGHT?? I've been spending the last several months basically becoming an expert in some new-to-me techniques (that are not common in my field, they're more physics/engineering), and that's somehow seen as "not being productive" which means "bad". Coworkers are simultaneously asking me to run experiments and calling me lazy. It's amazing.

I have a supportive partner and good friends, tho, so. :)
