I'm kind of shocked to realize I first heard about UNIX in 1988 and first got a login on a shared SunOS box in 1989. So I've been using UNIX (or Linux or macOS—they overlap) more or less continously for 34 years.

And looking at the folks who've been using it for 16 years longer (a) I feel like an underachiever, and (b) I'm suddenly getting a feel for how stupendously fast it grew.

Sometime in spring of '75, my friend Peter (sysadmin for the PDP-11/45) came around shouting "UNIX is Here! UNIX is Here!" I asked "What's a UNIX?" and he showed me the 1974 CACM article about UNIX.
