It doesn't feel right to say that I loved a book that terrified me and broke my heart. And yet. 5/5 Stars to the Book of the Unnamed Midwife by Meg Elison.

@bridgebury I've not come across that one before, maybe because it's Amazon exclusive. It looks good.

@rosjackson @bridgebury Oof, that book. I started it, thought it was really good, but only got about 25% of the way through before I had to put it down. It's pretty pessimistic

@eskay8 @bridgebury Maybe it isn't for me, then. I started reading A Fault In Our Stars but couldn't continue because I knew it was building up to major heartbreak. I can deal with pessimism, but it has to be meaningful and I have to be in the right mood for it.

@rosjackson @bridgebury Yeah I feel bad being down on the book because I know people who *loved* it and its clearly well written and realistic in its characterization. But it was not for me.

@rosjackson @eskay8
It's very pessimistic and incredibly bleak in a gendered, post-apocalyptic way. There is hope at the very end, but you have to go through a LOT to get there. It's definitely not going to be for everyone, and especially if you're already feeling worn down and are looking for an escape. It is not that book.
