Tonight I took a recipe my mom had for date oat bars and made a whole bunch of substitutions and tweaks to make a cranberry oat crumble that is dairy-free and gluten-free. It's delicious 😋

I have a lot of fun doing this sort of recipe tinkering. I keep a kitchen lab notebook for the recipes I create or modify. My spouse suggested that I show it to my chemistry students. I use a lot of the same habits

@belehaa This makes me smile. Everything’s chemistry after all.

@belehaa oh! I would love to see your kitchen lab notebook! I’m terrible about writing down my ideas and recipes. Most are on strips of paper stuck to the fridge. 😆

@DrFerrous @belehaa I finally switched to a notebook (which is on top of the pile of scrap paper that contains older notes and has now been moving with me since grad school...oof) and it definitely helped, but it also makes me want to switch to electronic so it would be searchable and I could keep all of the "modifications to X" in one place and not be flipping back and forth....

@SRLevine @DrFerrous My recipes are in a digital system (I use the Paprika app). The notebook is for when I experiment. Once I figure out what the ingredient amounts or steps should be, I add the recipe to my digital database
And I am not as consistent about it as I'd like to be. I used to keep my notebook on a shelf in my office, but that was often too big an energy barrier to go get it, so now it stays in the kitchen

@belehaa @SRLevine @DrFerrous I have two notebooks on top of the microwave (two because one is full, but i still keep using recipes out of it) Sometimes, usually if i am trying to share a recipe, it will end up on my blog. I should go through the full notebooks and digitize the winners.

Because a lot of recipe pages are so busy, and i am fussy about the way ingredients are written out, i will often copy a recipe to try it.
